Defrocked priest Shanley seeks new trial

Shanley was in Suffolk Superior Court on May 29 for a hearing on his motion for a new trial.

Robert Shaw, Jr., his new lawyer, argued that the theory of repressed memories was "junk science."

Shaw said that Shanley's attorney failed to challenge the theory vigorously during his trial.

"Paul Shanley, just like any other citizen, is entitled to a fair trial," he said.

Assistant District Attorney Loretta Lillios said that Shanley's defense did call an expert witness during the trial who questioned the reliability of repressed memories and cross-examined the state's expert on the theory.

Judge Stephen Neel did not immediately rule on Shanley's motion for a new trial.

Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represented more than 100 clergy abuse victims who reached civil settlements with the Archdiocese of Boston, has been flooded with calls about the motion. more

Park plan gets cold reception from Cornelius board

The master plan will be funded mostly through future bond referendums. Mecklenburg County commissioners approved the master plan in concept in a 9-0 vote last month, but have yet to approve a cap for funding the plan. Garges said the commission has recommended putting a $200 million bond on the ballot in this November's election, although it hasn't taken that step officially just yet.The expenses of operating all of the new projects outlined in the master plan will be determined in a later budget, but Garges estimates operating expenses to run about $53 million after the first seven years. Commissioner David Gilroy, keeping in time to his recent vocal opposition to operational expenditures in the town budget, questioned why the county couldn't just acquire the land and leave the park operations to municipalities or private enterprises."There's always a balance between public and private," said Garges. more

PC Version of Huxley Gets North American Release

Today, Korean internet big shot NHN announced that the PC version of Huxley will see a North American release in late 2008. Published under the Western branch of NHN, Huxley will be available to download via the company’s website at www.ijji.com. Whon Namkoong, CEO, NHN USA, Inc. commented on the news saying: "…We are very excited to bring the triple-A title to Western audiences…Huxley provides gamers with a unique and compelling experience that gamers everywhere are sure to enjoy". One thing that was missing from the press release was any further news on the Xbox 360 version of the game, which is planned to be released six months after the PC version and include an exclusive single player campaign. Given the long history of so many cancelled MMO games for the 360, it’s hard to remain positive over the lack of any further information, but then again no news is good news right? For those not in the know, Huxley is the latest, but not the first, game that combines the in-depth social experience of a massive multiplayer online game, with the fast-paced explosive action of a first person shooter. more

Open Question: Is this correct?? Underground Railroad ending in Quebec? ?

So I would assume that why there (I know that this is not the correct word, but African-American wouldn't be accurate and African-Canadian sounds weird) are black people that speak French is because of the Underground Railroad. After 1850, slaves that escaped to the North could be captured and brought back to the South, and, if you look at a map, it looks like the Underground Railroad would end in Ontario and Quebec. Is this why there are (again, not correct word, but I'm going to use it anyway) blacks that speak French?  more

Open Question: How to make girls see past my "pretty eyes" and ACTYUALLY like me? ?

I know it is a cliche and no I do NOT think I am good looking. However, i have had girls say to me - "I wouldn't date you, but I'd bring you to bed in a heartbeat" or "I wouldn't bring you home... unless we were going straight to bed" The reason they say is because I wouldn't - COULDN'T stay "faithful" because I could date pretty much anyone I want. I don't think that is the case. Also, as a matter of fact I have had atleast 3, GORGEOUS cheerleaders offer ..sex.. to me. I said no because I know I'm not ready... everyone know I turned them down and I get called gay a lot not because of it... the really were gorgeous but I'm not even 16! I go to private school and some of the girls @ my school - GORGEOUS! Absolutely shocking! The ask me out..and they just want to show me off to their little friends. I'm Canadian and I go to private school in London.. so they all think I'm "amazing" - ha! I'm ugly and dumb...and Ironically my self-esteem has taken a hit because I don't feel like a.. person...a mannequin.. I want a real relationship - I'm nearly 16 and haven't had my first kiss and I'm ready for a kiss - not for sex tho' Please - I'm telling the truth and "suck it up - do u know how many guys would pay to be in your situation" answers aren't what I am looking for How can I find a girl that doesn't just want to show me off - and really wants to, excuse the cliche - "Be with me" ?????????  more

Open Question: Do you think America is better than Canada?

First of all, this is not about politics or national policies but on cultural and overall lifestyles. Is it unreasonable for me, a Canadian, to dislike my country and want to move elsewhere - likely the States? I'm tired of Canada. I never really felt Canadian. Unless you're white, I don't think most people really consider you Canadian. Many people ask me where I am from, and I don't think most are interested in my ethnic background but knowing which country I came from. I don't have a different accent and I wear Western clothing so I don't know why they'd think this. Do Americans also do this to blacks? Very usually, ALL of the movies playing in theatres are American, about more than 90% of the music we listen to is American, the clothing style is American, our film industry is pretty much unsuccessful, most of our TV shows suck or are American or else knock offs of American shows, etc. There's no real culture difference between Americans and Canadians. I feel like calling ourselves Canadians is a farce. We're actually the 51st state of the US. Our economy is very much independent on the American economy, probably more than any other country. I know that basically all of the industrialized countries follow American culture very closely but their own culture is still apparent - ours isn't. I've been to the States last summer and I loved it! I went to Pennsylvania, Washington, etc. and the food was great and the portions larger, the cities and malls much bigger, and it's like it has some essence that Canada lacks (my relatives who've often gone to the States agree). Don't get me wrongs soon, I’m grateful that I live in a prosperous country like Canada and it is *horrible* but I just don’t like it. As the US gets health care, I'm out of Canada for good. So do you think I'm being unreasonable or too harsh? Do you agree with some aspects of Canada? Typo: I meant that Canada *isn't* horrible. Actually, my black friends and I have been openly insulted and discriminated against when in Quebec, particularly Montreal which is strange since it is very diverse. I find that people are more openly racist towards blacks and Muslims (as well as other minorities) in Quebec, which is the French part of Canada. To Mike Kelly, you bring up very good points. I do hope to go to school in the US just to see what it's like living there since I did not stay there for long on my last trip. And I'm very aware of the blatant racism. But hey, I've always rathered people say what they thought to my face, although I'm sure it's going to be very unpleasant. I do hope that they established free Health Care there so I can practise medicine guilt-free (I don't only want to serve the rich).  more

Open Question: Someone With Good Grammar?

I need help with editing my text about canadian painter Tom Thomson. It needs to be separated in paragraphs and please do other editing to help the flow of the text? here it is: Tom Thomson Introduction Many say me art was just a waste of time, that I should get a well-paying job to support myself. “Look Tom you’re living in a shack” they would say. It was what I wanted to do, it was my passion, the last thing I wanted to do was sit in an office and talk on the phone all day just to make money. I’d rather do something I loved and that I would enjoy for the rest of my life, which I did but unfortunately it all came to an end when I was 39 years old. I was born Thomas John Thomson on August 4th 1877 in Claremont, Ontario, and I grew up near Owen Sound, Ontario. In 1899 I had an apprenticeship at a machineshop, but I was fired because of tardiness. In the later months of 1899 I volunteered to fight in the second Boer War, and in 1901 I enrolled in a business college in Chatham. Shortly after (8 months to be exact) I dropped out to follow my brother who was operating a business school in Seattle. In 1904 I returned to Canada and studied with William Cruikshank from 1905-1906. A year later I joined Grip Ltd. An artistic design firm in Toronto where many of the future members of the Group Of Seven worked. I became a member of “The Ontario Society Of Artists” in 1914. I then began living in a utility shack on Canoe Lake where I volunteered as a fire fighter, ranger, and guide. I quit shortly after when there wasn’t enough time for painting. I spent my years painting and sketching on Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park and in 1917 that came to a tragic end. I disappeared during a canoe trip on July 8, 1917 and 8 days later my body was found in the lake. My official cause of death was “accidental drowning” but many people believed that wasn’t the case. There was fishing line wrapped around my leg seventeen times suggesting it was put there deliberately. I also had a severe head injury but that is thought to have been post-mortem (after death). Most people think I was murdered by my German-American neighbour Martin Bletcher Jr., others say I fell on a fire grate during a drunken brawl with J. Shannon Fraser (Owner of Canoe Lodge), and others say I was in a severe stage of depression and committed suicide. Only I know the real reason and some things are better kept a mystery. I was buried half a kilometer away from Canoe Lake before my family even knew of my death. My body was later exhumed and brought back to my hometown upon my family’s request. Art I began painting at a young age and I was influenced by impressionism which is a style of art (visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light, ordinary subject matter, and unusual visual angles.) I influenced “The Group Of Seven” and “The Canadian Group Of Painters”. The main people from the Group Of Seven that I influenced were A.Y. Jackson, Fred Varley, and Arthur Lismer. I began painting seriously when I was well into my thrities but it was always a big part of me. A few of my most recognized works of art were “The Jack Pine”, “Northern River”, and “The West Wind”. I painted those three paintings among others in a utility shack in Rosedale, my most creative artistic period was when I was living in the shack around 1915. In 1916 I returned to Algonquin Park(where I died). I was helped tremendously by Dr. James McCallum who helped me make my transition from “Graphic Designer” to “Professional Painter”. Many say my art resembles impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh, and Paul Cezanne which is a great honour for me. Since my death I’ve been recognized even more as an artist and in 2002 The National Gallery of Canada staged a major exhibition of my work. After my death J.E.H. MacDonald and John W. Beatty made a memorial plaque where I died. The cost was paid in full by Dr. James McCallum. Conclusion So even though my life was very short I am still very much alive through my art. My art will always be out there, I am very happy I got to meet and influence so many talented artists and I don’t regret anything in my life. If I could give any piece of advice to anyone who cared to listen I would say “follow your dreams, if some people don’t like it who cares?” Do what you want to do if you don’t everyday you will think about what your life would’ve been like if you followed your dreams. Just do it what’ve you got to lose? Thank you ! P.S. it's in first person because we're doing role playing with our painter. First person to edit it and do a good job gets ten points !  more

Open Question: What is your interpretation of this poem?

What do you thing were the reasons Mark Strand wrote this poem? It has been one of my absolute favorite poems of all times. Keeping Things Whole In a field I am the absence of field. Open Question: Can someone tell me how the US EMT-Intermediate course differs from the Canadian PCP?

I have been trying to locate information on what a US certified EMT-I can actually do, skillwise, with no success. All i know is that the US EMT-B is a prerequisite. I took the Canadian EMT-B in 1999 in the province of Saskatchewan, followed by the PCP upgrade in 2005 and both of these courses seem far more comprehensive then the US counterparts, and the cap between the countries doesn't seem to really narrow until the full blown EMT-Paramedic level. I mean no disrespect by this, and am interested in working in the US, but don't know where i stand. I also realize the citizenship issue will be a huge hurdle to get over. Thanks for any input.  more
