Washington to limit contacts with UN rights council
The United States opposed its creation, saying the new body's rules would still not guarantee its effectiveness, and has refused to take a seat.
Two years on, the council is under fire for failing to act on human rights violations in places like Sudan's Darfur region, while at the same time focusing on criticizing Israel for its treatment of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"Instead of focusing on some of the real and deep human rights issues around the world, it has really turned into a forum that seems to be almost solely focused on bashing Israel," McCormack said Friday.
"And, as a result, we're going to choose more selectively how and when we engage the council," he said.
Juliette de Rivero, Geneva advocacy director of Human Rights Watch, criticized the United States for dropping out of the council, on which it had been serving as an observer since 2006. more
Ten arms protesters are held
Seven men and three women were in custody last night being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage and aggravated trespass.
The men were aged between 17 and 43 and from Brighton, Worthing, Arundel, Bristol and London, with one address unknown.
Two women from London and Leicestershire and one whose address is unknown, all aged from 19 to 40, were also in custody.
After a rally at The Level and a march to Home Farm Business Park, the protest turned ugly when activists broke through police lines, vandalised cars, sprayed graffiti and broke windows while EDO employees were working inside.
Police used batons, pepperspray and dogs to move the protesters.
They then picked out and arrested people as they moved away from the site. more
Number of carbon control plans a concern, Canada West says
Gibbins worries that Western Canada is too small an economic region, with about as many people as Chicago, to be so fragmented.
For companies that operate in all the provinces, four sets of rules are going to be a headache, he said.
The bottom line is the western provinces should find a way to streamline their policies, he said, adding that the federal government needs to take more of a leadership role.

The NZD tumbled in the wake Wednesday's rate announcement from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Rates were left unchanged at 8.25% but the central bank said that it sees a fair chance of rates being lowered later this year. Furthermore it said that the economy has weakened more than expected and that it cannot rule out a technical recession. As a result of the massive NZD weakening we have reached the target on our selling recommendation on NZDUSD. more
